12 April 2010: Having been named ACT Young Australian of the Year for 2010, Pierre Johannessen doesn’t care about the personal achievement, but about how it will raise the profile of his organisation that spreads hope through playing basketball.
The University of Canberra graduate is CEO and co-founder of the Big Bang Ballers, a non-governmental organisation that uses the game of basketball to tackle youth poverty and social disadvantage.

The BIG BANGS CEO, Pierre Johannessen has been awarded the title of ACT Young Australian of the Year.
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope presented Johannessen with the coveted award at the National Portrait Gallery recognising his tireless efforts in humanitarian aid globally.

Pierre, Rieuk and Brian today visited Canberra Grammar School, Pierre’s alma-mater. The school generously donated $100 towards the Big Bang Ballers, presenting the Big Bangs with a cheque at their weekly assembly.
Our sincere thanks to all the boys, teachers and supporters of the school, especially Mr Simon Murray, headmaster of the school, and Jeff Knowles, one of our Board Members as well as a long-standing teacher at the school.
The assembly gave the Big Bangs an opportunity to tell the boys about the organisation, our aims, values and everyday practices.
